Angle-measuring appliances.-A course finder and converter for finding and shaping a sailing course from one point to another and for converting the geographical or true course to the magnetic or to the compass course, or vice versa, comprises a dovetailed bar 5, Figs. 2 and 4, for a slide 6 which carries, on a vertical post 10, a compass card 12 and pointers 15, 18, 21. The axis of the part 10 coincides with one edge 3 of the bar 5. The compass card 12 is mounted between two washers 13, 14, and is adjustable. The pointer 15, 16 is for indicating the true course and is adjusted into alinement with the edge 3 of the bar 5 and clamped to the post 10 in this position. The pointers 18, 21 arc for indicating the magnetic course and the compass course respectively; they are mounted with washers 20, 23, 25 and arc adjustable over the compass card by the nuts 19, 22. A clamping bolt 24 can be tightened to secure them in any position. As an illustration of using the apparatus, having given the geographical or true course D, Fig. 1, between two points C, E as N. by W. # W., that the magnetic variation is 5 degrees westerly, and that the ship's deviation is 5 degrees westerly, the edge 3 of the bar 5 is placed in alinement with the points C, E. The compass card is adjusted to point N. and S. or E. and W. along either a meridian or a latitude parallel, respectively; the pointer 18 is then adjusted 5 degrees easterly of the pointer 15, 16 and the pointer 21 is adjusted 5 degrees easterly of the pointer 18. The pointers 18, 21 then indicate the magnetic and the compass courses respectively.
