摘要
3554. Benjamin, G. H. Feb. 11. Cementation; cust-iron processes.-Carbon is introduced into iron or steel by heating the iron or steel either in a solid or molten state in the presence of a hydrocarbon gas under pressure by means of an alternating current. In the apparatus shown, puddle-bars 10 are heated to a red heat in a furnace 5 provided with adjustable electrodes 7, 8, 9 connected to a three-phase dynamo. Hydrocarbon gas is supplied by a pump 16 through a heater 15 and is allowed to flow through the furnace until the surface oxide is reduced. A valve 12 is then closed and the pressure is raised, the temperature being raised preferably to within a few degrees of the melting-point. The carbon combines with the iron, and the hydrocarbon rises in the chimney 11 until its pressure is sufficient to open the valve 12. Boron trioxide, graphitic carbon, a powdered halogen compound, grinders' waste, or other substances may also be introduced into the furnace.
