Seams between two or more pieces of leather or other material are consolidated and strengthened by the insertion of pronged clamps or staples having pointed or reduced limbs. The invention is particularly applicable to the construction of boots, gloves, or other articles of wearing-apparel, the points of the staples &c. being bent back with the material when clinched. The following forms of fastener are illustrated. Fig. 9 shows a single pronged fastener having a flat head and a pointed shank. Fig. 16 shows a staple fastening with a crosspiece corrugated in the vertical plane and adapted to engage several adjacent rows of stitches. Fig. 17 is a plan view of a staple which is corrugated in the horizontal plane. Fasteners with three or four prongs may be used. The clamps may be made from wire of any kind lacquered or coated, bronzed, nickeled, or coated with other metals.
