20,227. Waller, C. A. Sept. 3. Hulling, husking, and decorticating; damping grain; processes of treating grain.-Rice paddy is steeped in hot water, steamed, and dried to remove the husk. It is fed into a chamber a fitted with concentrically-arranged perforated vertical pipes d1, which communicate through a cylinder d, pipe e, and three-way cock f, with a water-pipe g and steam-pipe g1. Water is admitted till the paddy floats, and then steam till a temperature of 200‹ F. is reached, and the paddy is left to soak. The cock b is then turned until the solid part b1 is replaced by the perforations b2 through which the water drains away. After closing the cock b, steam is again admitted until the cover c begins to knock. The rice is withdrawn into the pipe i through the openings b3 in the cock b, and is carried away by a forced draught &c. to the drying-device.
