Ventilating grain; damping grain; conditioning grain. - A rotary drum for steeping, germinating, and kiln-drying malt, and for aÙrating and drying seeds, wheat, &c. consists of outer and inner perforated casings 4, 5 between which the material is held. The outer casing is formed with double pockets 20, Fig. 2, or single pockets 20, Fig. 3, and the inner casing with fixed or loosely mounted stirring- blades 21. Air is supplied to the drum through a trunk 2, Fig. 1, and a cylindrical casing 30 containing a fixed helicoidal baffle 34, which distributes the air on entry into the drum. For germinating, aerating, &c. the air passing down the trunk 2 is cooled and moistened by water from nozzles 25, which may be directed against or with the stream of air. Water particles carried by the air are separated by the baffle 34 before entry into the drum, and the separated water passes through perforations in the casing 30 and is led away by a pipe 32. Water may be introduced into the drum by a central perforated pipe 35. For drying malt, seed, &c., hot air is passed down the trunk 2, and the moistening-devices are not used.
