Miners' safety lamps.-The lamp is locked by a finger on a piece pivoted in the base taking over a ring on the upper part, the pivoted piece being automatically locked in the closed position and remaining locked until a spring-pressed catch is withdrawn by an electro-magnet. A piece b, in which is a closed chamber containing a spring-pressed stud c, is secured to the base a. A piece e made with a projection e1, Fig. 3, is pivoted in the piece b, and has a recess g cut in its underside to receive the end e' of the stud c. A bevelled slot guides the stud into the recess, and, when in position, it can only be withdrawn by an electro-magnet or other special mechanism. When in the locked position, the projection e' takes over the ring a1, Fig. 4, and prevents the oil cistern and wick from being withdrawn from it. The piece e may have its end e1 riveted in the jaw b4. This locking- device can be combined with the oil inlet described in Specification 8007/92.
