Testing strength, and elasticity of materials.- In testing the tensile strength of highly elastic materials, the specimen employed is in the form of an endless band b, Fig. 2, which is placed on the pins or rolls h. These are then moved apart so that the two halves of the ring are tested to breaking point. The use of rolls instead of pins equalizes the tension in the two halves of the specimen in case of unequal stretching, and in order that the whole specimen, including the parts resting on the rolls, may be subjected uniformly to the test, a gear-wheel k, Fig. 3, fixed to the lower roll h1, gears with a fixed rack k1, and thus causes the rotation of the band b and of the rolls during the extension of the specimen. For greater accuracy, a rotation synchronous with that of the lower roll h1 may be imparted to the roll h.
