23,765. Unge, W. T. Nov. 2. Fuzes for projectiles; torpedoes. -A percussion fuze is fired on passing through water, by the passage of the water through an inlet at its front end, thus operating a piston, which throws the firing - pin against the igniting- material, or vice versÔ, or compresses a spring, the ignition being timed by adjusting the area of the inlet. In one form, the firing-pin carried by the percussion hammer 4, Fig. 1, acts on ignition material in a slidable piece 6 in the usual manner if the fuze strikes a solid body. On entering the water, however, the water rushes through an opening 25, and, acting behind a piston 20, raises a sliding piece 10 within the piece 6, thereby compressing a spring 32 and bring- ing the piece 10 in front of a spring tongue 14 on the piece 6. As the piece 10 is raised, it is turned by a pin 11 travelling in an inclined groove 12, Fig. 2, in the piece 6 and in the fixed part of the fuze, until a cross-piece 17 on the piston - rod 16 coincides - with a corresponding groove in the piece 10, and releases the latter by acting on the spring tongue 14, the slidable piece 6 being then forced against the firing-pin 5. Safety wing-pieces 33, Fig. 3, for normally preventing the pin 5 from striking the ignition material, are connected together by links 37, and are retained in the safety position by springs 36 on their pivots. The wing-pieces 33 are thrown outwards by centrifugal force during the spinning of the projectile, and are held in this position by notches 39 engaging elastic tongues 38. In a modification, shown in Figs. 6 and 8, the water presses against the front side of a piston 20, and the slidable piece 6, carrying the igniting-material, is provided with a pin 47 working in an inclined slot 48 in a tubular extension 46 of the piston, and in a horizontal slot in the fixed cylindrical portion 19, so that the piece 6 is turned as the piston 20 is moved rearwards. When the pin 47 reaches the end of the inclined and horizontal slots, the compressed spring 32 forces the piece 6 against the firing-pin 5, and the pin 47 travels in a groove in the extension 46 and in the fixed portion 19. The safety-pieces 33, Fig. 8, are retained, when thrown open by the spinning action of the projectile, by hook-shaped plates 54 pivoted to the links 37 and engaging fixed pins 55. When the fuze is to be ignited only when passing through water, the firing-pin or the igniting- material is stationary.
