2212. Ross, R. L. Jan. 30. Collectors.-Relates to an automatic arrangement for lowering the trolley arm of a collector when it leaves the trolley wire, which is suitable for use on all overhead electric systems. The present invention consists in improvements on the collector described in Specification No. 21,031, A.D. 1901. Figs. 1 and 2 show a side elevation and plan, respectively, of the lower portion of the trolley arm in its normal position. The arm A is mounted on a pivot c, which is capable of moving in the slots d but is normally kept in the position shown by means of the piece a which is also mounted on the pivot c, and held in position by the projecting edge e. The sides b in which the slots d are formed are supported by the trolley standard B, which is capable of rotating on the inner tube C. A lever mounted in the sides b, at f1, has arms f, f2, f3 which work in the spaces between these sides. When the trolley A leaves the trolley wire, the springs, which are attached to the arm at the part Sx, pull the stops h down on to the arm f, thus lifting the arm f and knocking the piece a over the projecting edge e, which causes the trolley arm to fall until the upper part of the piece a is arrested by the arm f3. During the first part of the falling, the arm works about the part Sx so that the fall is rapid, but, as the falling proceeds, this pivot changes gradually to f3, and the descent thus becomes gradually retarded. When the trolley arm has fallen, the arm f is raised, thus preventing any rotation of the trolley by jamming a wedge - shaped piece k between the parts B, C. To re-set the trolley, the arm is pulled lower, when, by the action of the spring j on the projection ax and the rollers i on the cam-surface i1, the piece a is raised to its former position and the wedge k, falls.
