The present invention is a photocatalyst by tethering (deposition) a metal (e.g., a late transition metal, such as a metal ion of nickel) to the surface of a semiconductor (photocatalyst) at least in part using an organic ligand. It relates to a method of improving the efficiency of (semiconductor photocatalyst). More specifically, 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT) is an excellent molecular linker for attaching transition metal complexes (e.g., nickel (Ni 2+ ions)) to the semiconductor surface (e.g., organic Ligand), and the semiconductor surface may be in the form of a cadmium sulfide surface.
