An embodiment of an integrated atom chip that is used to measure atoms is discussed. One or more magnetic traps integrated with an optical waveguide printed on the integrated atom chip facilitate the loading of the atoms into an optical evanescent field trap of the optical waveguide in order to measure the atoms. The two or more cooling stages are used to gradually cool the atoms from an initial temperature to a final temperature of the atoms as they are mode-matched and loaded into the optical evanescent field trap of the optical fiber.
