Techniques for manufacturing artificial biointerfaces include a chamber divided by a fluid permeable fence into a central region and two side channels, and at least three extending over one of the central region and two side channels, respectively. Includes providing a patterned microfluidic chip with a fluid path. The porous filling of hard beads is placed within the central region to define the bead bed and the beads are of a size that can be retained by a fence. Biowalls can be grown on at least one segment of the fence that separates the central region from one lateral channel, which is formed at least partially by viable cells cultured in beads. Beads can be modified, coated, or functionalized to improve cell attachment and growth, and particles or molecules can be suitably added to the bead bed for reporting or administration.
