A device for generating soft x-rays comprises: an electron source configured to generate an electron beam comprising electron micro-bunches; an electron accelerator configured to accelerate electron micro-bunches from an electron source; and a laser configured to generate a laser beam that collides with the accelerated electron micro-bunches in a back-propagation direction to generate soft x-rays by inverse Compton scattering. The electron source includes: a magneto-optical trap configured to generate a cryogenic atomic gas; two backpropagating excitation laser beams configured to generate a standing wave to induce periodic spatial modulation of the cryogenic atomic gas along the beam propagation direction; and an ionizing laser configured to induce photo-ionization of the cryogenic atomic gas.
