The present invention is a process for extracting tantalum from an acidic aqueous phase A1, comprising contacting the aqueous phase A1 with a phase A2 that is immiscible with water and separating the aqueous phase A1 from the phase A2. Relates to the process, comprising two steps, wherein phase A2 is formed by one ionic liquid or mixture of ionic liquids as extractant. The invention also relates to a process for recovering tantalum using this extraction process and also to the use of an ionic liquid or a mixture of ionic liquids as extractant for extracting tantalum from such aqueous phase A1.
