Method for performing x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy system for use with a small laboratory x-ray source to measure x-ray absorption of a target element in an object with high spatial and spectral resolution . The spectroscopic system comprises a small, high-intensity laboratory X-ray source, an array of optical lenses for collecting the X-rays transmitted through the object to be examined, and a spectrometer. The spectrometer includes a single crystal (and mosaic crystal in some embodiments) analyzer for dispersing the transmitted light to a spatially resolved X-ray detector. A high intensity/high dose X-ray source has an exit angle of 0-105 mrad and is coupled to an optical lens array. The array of optical lenses collects the high dose X-rays and focuses them in spots less than 500 μm resulting in high dose density. The coating on the array of optical lenses acts as a "low-pass" filter that allows one to observe a given bandwidth of x-rays while rejecting harmonics.
