The invention relates to a basic structure provided with defensive rods, for protecting box trees or box bushes from infestation with box tree moths. A mesh-shaped basic structure has, largely on one side, protrusions at a distance of at most approximately 200 mm. An alternative rod-shaped basic structure likewise bears protrusions, which protrude beyond the plant body with a distance of at most 500 mm. The invention further relates to a method for protecting box trees from the box tree moth, in which method a basic structure provided with defensive rods is arranged over the plant or in the outer branches of the plant or in the plant body down into the soil.
