The invention relates to a method for issuing publicly trusted certificates (C) for plant components (G) of a technical plant, in which method: a) a certification module (ZM) of at least one plant component (G), which is intended to receive a publicly trusted certificate (C), queries at least one component identifier (K); b) the certification module (ZM) transmits the at least one component identifier (K) together with a certificate request (CSR) for a publicly trusted certificate (C) to a registration authority (RA); c) the registration authority (RA) checks, on the basis of the at least one component identifier (K), whether the at least one component (G) belonging to the component identifier (K) is assigned to at least one authorised person or at least one authorised company; d) if so, the registration authority (RA) requests a publicly trusted certificate (C) for the at least one component (G); e) the requested publicly trusted certificate (C) is issued and transmitted to the certification module (ZM). The invention also relates to a system (S) for issuing publicly trusted certificates (C) for plant components (G) of a technical plant, to an engineering (ES) or control system for a technical plant, and to a technical plant.
