A system for estimating the severity of a bearing defect in an induction engine uses a set of filters and a set of quantitative models designed for a set of fault frequencies. Upon receipt of measurements of the stator current, the system extracts the first defective current from the stator current using the first filter, determining the first counter-inductivity variation from the first defect current using the first quantitative model,and classifies the first counter-inductivity variation with the defect-severity classifier to determine the severity of a first type of defect in the induction engine. Similarly, the system classifies a second type of defectusing the second filter and the second quantitative model. The system produces one or a combination of the severity of the first type of defect in the induction engine and the severity of the second type of defect in the induction engine.
