A method of inspecting a capillary tube of a steam generator using an eddy current sensor, wherein the eddy current sensor is accelerated and decelerated in a predetermined manner so as to substantially reduce the possibility of damage to the eddy current sensor. The reduced stress on the probe reduces the radiation exposure of workers involved in replacing radioactive waste and damaged probes. If the eddy current signal is recorded each time the eddy current sensor reaches multiple positions at equal intervals along the thin tube, the speed of the eddy current sensor can be increased without impairing the validity of the recorded data. Can be changed. The inspection system uses an encoder that outputs a series of signals in response to increments in probe travel within the steam generator capillaries.
