What is Anesthesiology?Anesthesiology is a young specialty，with most academic departments tracing their beginnings to Ralph Waters，MD at the University of Wisconsin,USA，in the 1930s．Before 1940 anesthesiology was not the practice of medicine．Today，anesthesiology is not the practice of medicine in many places．For example，in many sub-Saharan African countries anesthesia is provided,according to state poficy，by non-physicians．Estimated anesthesia related mortality in these countries approaches 1：500 general anesthetics，but whether this is due to inadequate training or inadequate equipment is not certain．In the USA,there is rising uncertainty that anesthesiology will continue as a medical specialty．In some states nurses are allowed to provide anesthesia without suporeision by a physician，arguing that providing anesthesia is the practice ofnursing，not medicine．A majority of the American public does not know that anesthesiologists are doctors，yet when they are told this，most of them prefer having their care from a physician than from a nurse．This has led the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)to begin a marketing and educational campaign to inform the public that anesthesiology is the practice of medicine．If they fail，many people believe that anesthesiology in the USA will disappear as the practice of medicine and become the practice of nursing．
