The presence of match-fixing has been suspected since the early 20th century in professional sumo.Statistical analysis pointed out such cheating in professional sumo,and some retired wrestlers also blew thewhistle on this matter. However, Japanese Sumo Association bad consistently insisted that there had never been match-fixing in professional sumo.National Police Agency of Japan found messages suggesting match-fixing on the wrestlers' cellularphones, which were confiscated during an investigation into illegal gambling on baseball games by wrestlers.On February 2nd 2011, they disclosed the numerous messages sent from March to June 2010, on which asmany as 14 sumo wrestlers were implicated in match-fixing.
