Inappropriate antibiotic use has been a contributing factor to the emergence of resistant bacteria and the growth of health care costs. To evaluate the impact of pharmacist intervention on antibiotic use in respiratory wards, we performed the prospective controlled study in our setting. The study was carried out over a four-month period beginning in July 2009. Two independent respiratory wards were randomized into control and intervention group. Standard treatment strategies were performed in the control group, while a respiratory clinical pharmacist was assigned to the intervention group to make daily rounds with the medical team and give real-time intervention on antibiotic use when needed.
