“Pulling Effect”in Online News Propagation

摘要

The information senders and the information receivers play different roles in information spreading process.Understanding of their relative importance to spreading process has significant implications for policy making, crisis management, and brand imaging. In this paper, we conduct an empirical analysis on Chinese online news propagation to detect which factors take affects on the number of news reprinting from one news portal to another. This research draws on historical behaviors data from more than one thousand Chinesernonline news portals to examine dynamic patterns and influence factors of online news events propagation. The empirical investigation reveals that the number of reprinted news articles varies greatly for different pairs of news portals. According to historical news reporting behaviors and topological structures of news reprinting network (NRN), this paper examines several characteristics of news portals and then explore the effects of these characteristics on the features of news reprinting among news portals and the dynamics of news event propagation. The results show that the news propagation is acted as a "pulling process", in which the activeness of destination news portalsrnplays a more important role than that of source news portals.
