In 1996, work began, in the port of Ghent, to construct the Kluizendok on the left bank of the sea canal Ghent-Terneuzen. In a first phase, spread over seven years of construction, the dock is being enlarged within the city limits of Ghent, so that 200 ha of industrial estate will be opened up for water-related activities. A second phase, which will extend onto the municipality of Evergem, is planned for the horizon 2005 - 2010. Current works include a 1,200 m-long quay-wall, with a water depth of 18 m, to afford access to the Port of Ghent.
