A fine resolution numerical tidal model of Ramsgate coastal region on the east coast of the Isle of Thanet, Kent, England is presented. As well as producing a general picture of tidal regimes and surface elevation, the model is designed to reflect potential impact of any offshore construction (e.g. harbour extension) on the local environment and ecology. A non-linear form of the Darcy's law is adopted to develop a simple mechanism to permit current flux through permeable harbour breakwaters at any instant of the tidal cycle. A technique, developed earlier, is also applied to investigate the pressure and mean flow distributions within a porous breakwater subject to attack by high frequency standing waves. This is done by means of application of a linear approximation of the Darcy's law to find a regular perturbation expansion (in small permeability) of velocity potential inside a breakwater. Isobars and streamlines are computed analytically for an apex breakwater and the transmission coefficient estimated for trapezoidal breakwaters.
