Poorly crystallized hydroxyapatite (HAp) or calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHAp) was obtained by grinding, under dry conditions, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate and calcium oxide mixtures with different calcium-to-phosphate ratios (Ca/P) ranged from 1.50 to 1.70. Grinding was carried out during 6 hours with a rotating micromill, 500-ml mortar, 5 balls 27 mm PHI, at 350 rpm. The resulting powder has a mean particle size of around 12 mum. By heatin the ground powders at 900 deg C for 2 h, well crystallized beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) was obtained when ca/P was 1.50, stoichometric HAp when Ca/P was 1.70 and beta-TCP - HAp mixtures for 1.50 < Ca/P < 1.70.
