AMC (alumina matrix composite) is a ceramic material to be used for bearing surfaces in joint replacement. AMC is made of alumina (> 70percent) and zirconia (approx. 24percent) with some additives. AMC components will be used as long-term implants. Biocompatibility tests demanded by the European standard EN 30993 were performed. The results show that AMC is biocompatible; it is bioinert.
