The birefringence of PET, as depicted in Fig. 2, is sufficiently large that it would preclude its use in many systems where the polarization state of the transmitted light is to be preserved, as in a liquid crystal display. Even if the PET were to used as a retarder type of polarizer (as, for example, a circular polarizer), its optical properties vary across the web and sections would have to be sliced out of selected parts of the web. In other words, a two mil thickness of web functions like a "fourth order" full wave plate at its edge and a "second order" full wave plate at its center.
