This paper reports the results of flight tests in an ongoingrnproject to develop methods for transmitting GPS WidernArea Augmentation System (WAAS) data over LORAN.rnThe Federal Aviation Administration is funding the projectrnto determine what potential benefits LORAN-C mightrnprovide to the National Airspace System (NAS). The fullrn250-bit WAAS message is transmitted in one second. Thisrninformation bandwidth is achieved via 16-ary IntrapulsernFrequency Modulation (IFM) and Reed-Solomon forwardrnerror correction.rnThe tests were conducted using the Tok, Alaska LORANrntransmitter at a Group Repetition Interval (GRI) of 48,300rnusec. The FAA Technical Center’s Convair 580 and arnKing Air C-90SE aircraft of Ohio University flying atrnspeeds of up to 300 knots were used in the testing. In therntwo days of testing, the aircraft cover much of Alaska fromrnPrudoe Bay on the North Slope to Juneau and southwestrnpast Homer.rnThe results indicate the WAAS message was received outrnto approximately 420 NM including the North Slope.rnAntenna steering and erasure decoding improvedrnperformance to varying degrees.rnLastly, the FY02 goals are outlined based on the positivernresults of this test.
