Dust holding capacity is the primary feature of engine air filters operating in dusty environments.rnInertial separators and high porosity or fibrous prefilters are commonly used to decrease the dustrnload to the main filter.rnIn the patented design discussed in this paper, prefilter fibers are positioned mainly parallel tornthe flow direction. Thus, the contact surface area between the dust particles and their aggregatesrnremains large and the face area of the dust aggregates stays small during dust loading. This is arnfavorable condition for a more stable filtration process.rnThis paper discusses the filter performance of high dust holding capacity engine air filters. Filterrnspecifications, design and performance are discussed in detail. Performance of the media andrnfull size filters utilizing new generation prefilters, including pressure drop, efficiency and dustrnholding capacity were determined using on-line particle counters and the gravimetric testrnmethod. Initial and final efficiency, and dust loading performance characteristics for media andrnfilters, are provided.
