Ice induced steady state vibrations were measured on two slender vertical offshore jacket platforms in Bohai Bay of China recently. Primary analysis of the test data confirms that it is self-excited vibration because dynamic ice force was controlled by structure. When ice interacts with a slender vertical structure at particular ice speed, the ice failure mode may alter between ductile and brittle while structure moving forward and backward. Meanwhile, micro-crack activities play an important role, and can be used to explain why the structure is quickly unloaded and the lock in phenomenon of ice with structure.
