The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) intends to relocate U.S. Highway 16 as it runs through the beautiful Black Hills near Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, and Jewel Cave National Monument. The proposed alignment utilizes a bridge to carry traffic approximately 350 feet above the floor of Hell Canyon. A bridge length of approximately 2000 feet is required to span the canyon. The SDDOT retained HNTB Corporation to perform the structure type selection, as well as preliminary and final design. This paper summarizes the conceptual studies and tools used in the evaluation process that led to the selection of the recommended bridge type.
