The Japan Electric Vehicle Association has been conducting electric vehicle sharing demonstrationrnprojects in several cities including Kyoto, Osaka and Yokohama for the furtherance of diffusion ofrnEVs. The major purposes of these projects are to verify the efficiency of car sharing/rental system withrnthe intelligent transport system technologies in terms of introduction of EVs, as well as to increase thernpublic awareness of EVs and EV-sharing. The electric vehicles have the advantages of environmentalrnaspects and energy efficiency, while they are handicapped by high cost and short range per charge. Thernsubject projects aim to cover the specific problems of EVs with the method of car sharing/rental andrnITS technologies. The EV-sharing system is not an independent transportation system, but to bernconnected with the existing public transportation such as railways, having the advantages of respectiverntransportation, the efficiency and economy of public transportation and the conveniences of privaterncars. The objectives of the projects are to develop a system combining the car sharing with ITSrntechnologies such as automatic reservation, unmanned rental and check-out system, and to determinernthe social acceptance of the system and its economical viability on commercial basis. Therndemonstrations have been conducted targeting the specific areas and users: Short-distance driving byrnworkers and visitors in business areas at city center; Daily travel by housewives such as shopping andrncommute between house and station in residential areas; Delivery of parcels in commercial areas; andrnShort driving for sightseeing in tourist areas. A new demonstration project started in Kyoto last yearrncomprises a system corresponding to all the said potential ways of utilization. This paper will reportrnthe details of several EV-sharing projects in Japan including their objectives, features and results, andrnexamine the feasibility and problems of the EV sharing/renal system for diffusion of electric vehicles.
