This paper describes an advanced software simulation tool (ES-Sim) for analysis, design and controlrnof electric scooters. ES-Sim is the acronym for Electrical Scooter Simulator and it was developedrnfrom Department of Electrical System and Automation, University of Pisa, for Piaggio S.p.A.,rninnovative vehicle section, one of the European leading industries in scooter production. ES-Sim toolrnhas two main objectives. The first one is to get a user-friendly SW tool, able to easily simulate thernscooter system as a combination of primitive modules (to be specific, five different classes of modulesrnare considered: the battery, the electric drive, the battery charger, the mechanical loads, the auxiliaryrnelectrical loads). The modularity of ES-Sim makes it an easy-to-use SW tool suitable for quick testingrndifferent solutions for electric scooters in terms of energy consumption and efficiency. In such a wayrnthe development of different solutions (e.g. the choice of different electric drives for traction, or ofrndifferent strategies of chargers) is easy to compare, cheap and safe; this step is mandatory beforernstarting any experimental set-up. The second objective of ES-Sim is to integrate a database in itsrnstructure. Each new component can be inserted in a standard database and its data are automaticallyrnpassed to the SW tool. ES-Sim distinguishes from any commercial SW tool, because it works both asrna database and as a simulation tool, simultaneously: it seems and it can be used as a standardrnindependent database, but data are available to dynamic simulator in an automatic way.
