The Plug-In hybrid electric vehicle with an electric only range is not a new concept. Cars of thisrngeneral sort have been constructed in the past. The Woods Electric Car Company constructed carsrnlike this around 1910 [1]. Though cars powered purely by internal combustion engines dominated thernmarket for decades, research in the hybrid concept had resurgence in the 1970’s and continues today.rnThe University of California at Davis spearheaded the research in the 1990's with the Plug-In concept.rnThis paper will describe the reason why this concept was explored and the resulting performance,rnefficiency, and emissions gains, including green house gases from the “energy well” to the wheels.rnThe paper also describes a study that investigates varying battery pack size of simulated hybridrnvehicles and reports the results of experimental vehicles. The conclusion is that the larger the batteryrnpack the more efficient the system becomes up to the limit set by vehicle performance requirements.
