1.Introduction An interpenetrating polymeric network (IPN) is defined as a combination of two or more polymers in a network form that arc synthesized in juxtaposition [1] The simultaneous interpenetration of two crosslinked polymers is expected to impart outstanding mechanical properties that are due to a synergistic effect induced by the enforced compatibility of the components [2-4]. Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogel is a synthetic hydrogel possessing a high mechanical strength, resistance to many chemicals, and relatively high water content in its swollen state. PHEMA hydrogel has high water content similar to body tissues and is currently used in medical applications such as corneal implants, ureters, cardiovascular implants, contact lenses, tissue repair surgery, and many dental applications[5,6]. Chitosan is a widely used natural hydrophilic polymer which has excellent biocompatibility, antibacterial, and mechanical properties. Sodium methacrylate (SMA) is a typical hydrophilic monomer that has very high water content.
