We have developed a surrounding area monitoring system comprising two or morevehicle-mounted cameras and a system for early approaching object detection using optical flowtechnology. The new system assists the driver by monitoring the blind spot during lane changes.In particular, this system distinguishes a detection object from the background and reduces thepossibility of false background detection, thereby reliably helping the driver visually detect othervehicles running alongside or approaching from the side rear. Experimental results confirm thatthis system has practicable detection performance with a low false detection rate. The new systemcan be built into conventional all-around monitoring systems at low cost.
