Relevant Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) advice must have focus, context, and be appropriate to the current operating environment. It will be argued that a flight deck KBS sub-system could be designed to assist aircrew amelioration of hazards to the operation of flight systems. Quality design of such a system could only be achieved through the combined efforts of a team expert in Knowledge Elicitation, Safety Engineering, Engineering Psychology, and KBS Design. This paper will argue the necessity for KBS design to consider system cognitive functions and new forms of multidisciplinary teamworking. Further, it will argue the use of KBS for capturing pilot inappropriate actions and advising on means of their resolution or amelioration. For example, the entry of FMS positions that might cause an infringement of airspace reservations. In addition, the use of KBS for Fault Detection, Inspection, and Rectification (FDIR) is considered. This article also discusses some of the potential hurdles to be overcome in the certification of such systems for use in the modem aircraft cockpit.
