In testing the new Fe/SMZ for it's ability to reductively dechlorinate PCE, it has been established that the pellet enhances PCE removal by a factor 2-3 over a raw zero valent iron powder or untreated Fe/zeolite pellets. TCE levels were found to be consistently higher in the Fe/SMZ than in the Fe/zeolite. Raw zero valent iron powder also has a small capacity to sorb HDTMA to its surface and then subsequently reduce PCE through the same reductive process. The Fe/zeolite has a sorption capacity of about 80 mmol/kg while the iron powder only displays a capacity of about 4 mmol/kg. However, the modified iron's ability to reduce PCE was increased by a factor of 3 after being surfactant-modified, and the TCE production was increased by an order of magnitude. Based on the above results, it appears that Fe/SMZ is a promising new material to be utilized in in situ groundwater remediation. Fe/SMZ may require significantly less barrier material to remediate the same amount of contamination than if a mere retardation or degradative type of material were used.
