Because of advantages with respect to economics, quality and flexibility compared to the mechanical notching, contactless laser beam scribing might be the future standard choice for connecting rods. Actual laser cracking workstations [2,3] offer cracking stations for connecting rods with bore diameters between 15 mm and 70 mm and with pitches from 114-170 mm at various bolt distances. Other cracking tasks are being investigated. The first promising results have been demonstrated for divided ball bearings.
