The electron beam welding of transmission components, both in and out of vacuum, has been employed by the automotive industries of the USA, Europe and Asia for several decades. Even though the parts being welded in different areas of the world are similar in design, the attitude about using EBW as a production tool, versus employing some other competing joining method, seems to vary between USA, European and Asian automotive manufacturers - with European and Asian automotive industries exhibiting an increased demand for EBW. While the in-vacuum EBW is the preferred process to join parts that require narrow, parallel sided welds (which result in least possible part distortion), NVEBW makes possible the highest production rates by processing the parts directly in atmosphere. Due to the diffused electron beam in air, the welds are wider compared to those produced in vacuum, thus allowing a less precise joint preparation. Today, many production welders use indexing table arrangements with automatic parts handling to achieve the highest production rates possible; however, manually loaded welders with the capability for being easily retooled are preferred for smaller lot sizes of many different parts.
