The Waste Watch Center is using Behavior Change methodologies to maximize participation of do-it-yourself motor oil changers (DIYers) in a curbside collection program in Lowell, Massachusetts. Traditional environmental education programs rarely produce greater than 15 percent participation, whereas Behavior Change programs are capable of generating the high levels of participation (75 percent) necessary to effectively address problems such as improper disposal of used motor oil by DIYers.
