Scientific research on pesticides and streams has been used effectively by the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County to educate residents about natural lawn care and reducing pesticide use. Media events focusing on research results have reached millions of people through television, radio, and newspapers. Joint efforts with water quality research researchers have been productive for both the Hazardous Waste Program and the scientists. Scientific research helps the program to increase credibility, defend against criticism, and focus public outreach efforts. The US Geological Survey and Department of Ecology have received increased publicity for their important work.
