AspireSpace is a group of engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs, who, in their spare time, build and operating small sounding rockets, with the common dream of creating a new British space programme. This programme ultimately aims to launch small satellites into low earth orbit; and to promote the education of young people in science and technology.rnThis paper principally covers the development of AspireSpace's first hybrid rocket engine, the H2, operating on nitrous oxide and polyethylene with an impulse of up to 1800Ns and a thrust of 600N. The advantages of hybrids for a group of amateurs are covered. The early development of the H2 is detailed, followed by the design loop which AspireSpace ran to optimise the engine operation. The current test programme and plans to use the H2 design to propel a range for small sounding rocket vehicles are outlined. The H20 cryogenic (LOX) oxidiser hybrid is covered in brief, including the intention of AspireSpace to use the H20 design for a single stage sounding rocket capable of reaching 100km apogee. A novel polymer lined composite LOX tank designed and manufactured at TU Delft for H20 powered sounding rockets is also covered.rnThe use of green propellants has been one of the deciding factors in the achievements of the AspireSpace test programme.
