At the horizon of 2010, the foreseen evolutions of Ariane 5 include a new generation of solid boosters: metallic cases exchanged for filament wounded ones. Besides, alternative preliminary studies are performed concerning liquid boosters for their probable advantages in terms of performances. Nevertheless the exchange of the solid boosters of Ariane 5 by liquid boosters is not immediate and needs systems studies and cost evaluation.rnA study performed by EADS-LV under CNES contract on the implementation of a LOx/CH_4 acceleration stage on Ariane 5 has focused on a preliminary design of what would be an Ariane 5 with liquid boosters and on the system consequences of the use of liquid acceleration stage on Ariane 5.rnThe performances are quite interesting: the payload mass is greater than the one obtained with solid boosters, and the objectives of about 14 tons on a GTO orbit could be realized, with a potential growth up to 15-16 tons on a GTO orbit.rnMoreover, another advantage is to be noted: the liquid boosters reduce the dynamic pressure along the flight.rnThis preliminary study of the implementation of liquid acceleration stage on Ariane 5 shows that this concept is greatly credible, under the assumption that it might be possible to have a low recurrent cost for the considered LOx/CH_4 engine.
