In the winter of 2000, a decision was made to permanently shut down the BrookhavenrnNational Laboratory (BNL) High Flux Beam Reactor (HFBR). Efforts to plan eventualrndecommissioning alternatives were then initiated in the summer of 2000. A key aspect ofrnany alternative was to understand the various options for the dispostioning of the HFBRrnVessel, Internals and Thermal Shield. Physical removal, transportation and disposal siternissues posed critical decision making challenges. Options investigated, challengesrnaddressed and decommissioning path forward decisions made for the HFBR arernpresented.
