Oxy-fuel combustion is expected to be one of the most effective methods to improve energy efficiency and reduce NO_x and CO_2 emissions from high temperature industrial processes such as glass melting furnaces. In this study, a series of experimental investigations of oxy-natural gas flames was conducted. Characteristics of radiative heat transfer and NO_x emission generated by three types of oxy-natural gas burners, a generic, FDI (fuel direct injection), FDI flat and two commercial oxy-gas and oxy-oil burners, were tested and investigated at a semi-industrial scale test furnace. The results showed overall superior performance of the FDI flat flame oxy-fuel burner and remarkably low NOx emission by the FDI flame oxy-fuel burner. Numerical simulations of these burners were conducted, and the measured and calculated total radiative heat flux profiles along the furnace hearth were found to be in reasonable agreement.
