Recently, the homogeneous charged compression ignition (HCCI) engine, a newly designed high performance internal combustion engine, has been proposed. The method of controlling combustion is vital in putting HCCI engines into practical use. However, there have been no effective solutions to the problem. The main purpose of this report is to identify an available controlling method of HCCI engines. In this study, a single cylinder HCCI engine was operated with natural gas. As a result, it is confirmed that the engine can follow the load by changing intake gas temperature and equivalence ratio. Additionally the performance prospect of HCCI engine was estimated by using cycle simulation. The two-zone model and Livengood-Wu integration equation were adopted in the simulation model to reduce calculating time for simple and practical use. On the basis of our simulation, it was shown that its thermal efficiency could be improved by incorporating the Miller cycle concept.
