Natural gas hydrates are metastable minerals whose formation, stable existence and decomposition depend upon pressure, temperature, the composition of the gas and water used to generate the hydrate and the structure of the pore space. Hydrates are inclusion compounds in which water is the solvent. Molecules of water are joined by hydrogen bonds to form a lattice which contains large cavities. Gas molecules are absorbed into those cavities.rnDuring our studies of kinetic and phase behavior, we have determined that the content of gas dissolved in water decreases significantly as a result of blockage at the gas-water interface by the hydrate, and also due to a sharp change in the surface tension forces at the gas-water and hydrate-water interfaces (Makogon 1997). Because hydrates will lower the content of gas dissolved in the water that contacts hydrate, the formation of gas hydrates in nature is a complicated process. In this paper, we will illustrate how gas solubility affects the existence of gas hydrates in nature.
