摘要

Turbochargers for large-bore reciprocating engines will no longer merely represent a system addon to increase the air-to-fuel ratio, but will now begin to play a major role as a controllable component that significantly reduces pollutant emissions and increases engine fuel efficiency. Recent and current research activities are spearheading initiatives to transform the turbocharger from the system add-on to a major league player within the entire engine system. For decades, turbochargers have been used to increase the power density from an engine by simply forcing more air mass in a cylinder that then allowed more fuel to be added to the combustion process. Then, in the 1990's another dimension of turbocharging became imperative: reduce emissions. This paper looks at several opportunities to improve the performance and flexibility of turbochargers, which in turn increase the performance and operating envelop of the internal combustion engine.
